Riyadh/New Delhi: In an extraordinary act of heroism during the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage, Asif Bashir, a 32-year-old volunteer from Pakistan, saved 44 lives, including 24 Indian pilgrims, amid a deadly heatwave in Mina, Saudi Arabia. His selfless actions have earned him widespread praise and recognition across borders.
Amid temperatures soaring beyond 48°C, Bashir provided water, life-saving medicines, and transported unconscious pilgrims to safety, often carrying them on foot for kilometers when ambulances were unavailable. His efforts earned him the title “Angel of Mina” among those he rescued.
In recognition of his bravery, the Government of India has nominated Bashir for a prestigious civil award, which will be presented at a ceremony on Republic Day, January 26, 2025. Indian ministers, including Kiren Rijiju and Smriti Irani, lauded his selfless service, describing it as an inspiration that transcends national boundaries.
The Government of Pakistan is also considering honoring Bashir for his exemplary humanitarian contributions.
