Meghalaya Launches DNA-Based Research Project to Study Origins of Indigenous Tribes

Shillong, April 14: Conrad K. Sangma on Monday announced a comprehensive research initiative aimed at studying the origins and evolution of Meghalaya’s indigenous communities, including the Khasi people, Jaintia people, and Garo people.

According to the Chief Minister, the state government has constituted two separate expert committees to carry out the study. One committee will focus on the Khasi and Jaintia communities, while the other will undertake research on the Garo tribe, ensuring a more specialised and detailed approach.

The project will adopt a multidisciplinary framework, incorporating DNA mapping alongside linguistic, cultural, and historical analysis. The research aims to examine migration patterns, trace genetic linkages, and document the socio-cultural evolution of these communities.

Officials stated that the initiative will involve collaboration with academic researchers and institutions, with the objective of building a comprehensive knowledge base on the indigenous populations of the state.

The findings are expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of Meghalaya’s tribal heritage and provide documented insights into the origins and development of its major ethnic groups.
