Ranchi, 4 August 2025:
Veteran tribal leader and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) patriarch Shibu Soren, popularly known as Dishom Guru, passed away this morning after prolonged illness. He was 81.
Soren was a towering figure in the Jharkhand movement that led to the creation of India’s 28th state in 2000. Born on 11 January 1944 in Nemra village, he dedicated his life to the rights of tribals over land and resources.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, his son, expressed deep grief on social media, saying,
“Aadarniya Dishom Guruji has left us all. Today I am empty.”
Shibu Soren served multiple terms as Lok Sabha MP from Dumka and became Jharkhand’s Chief Minister thrice. He also held the Coal Ministry portfolio in the UPA government.
Political leaders across party lines, including Prime Minister and Opposition figures, paid tribute, recalling his role as a champion of social justice and Adivasi empowerment.
State mourning has been declared in Jharkhand. The funeral is expected to be held with full honours.
