Meghalaya Gives Official Language Status to Khasi and Garo

In a major cultural and political decision, Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the Meghalaya Official Languages Ordinance, 2026, granting Khasi and Garo official language status alongside English.

The move repeals the Meghalaya State Language Act, 2005, and will gradually allow Khasi and Garo to be used in government communications and administration.

Another key change: the Meghalaya State Legislature (Continuance of English Language) Act, 1980 will be amended, allowing MLAs to speak and debate in Khasi and Garo inside the Assembly, in addition to English.

This marks a historic step for linguistic recognition, indigenous identity, and stronger representation of local communities in governance.
